The Discipline of Not Responding
"Seeing From Within" A Quiet Place to Return to Yourself
There was a time when I thought responding quickly meant I cared.
Answering the message.
Returning the call.
Making sure no one felt ignored.
I believed staying engaged
was the same as staying connected.
What I Didn’t See
Not every message requires a response.
Not every situation is mine to step into.
And not every person is asking for understanding—
sometimes they are simply used to access.
The Pause
Lately, I’ve been practicing something different.
I pause.
Not to avoid.
Not to withdraw.
But to listen.
What the Silence Shows Me
In the quiet, I ask:
Am I responding from peace… or pressure?
Is this mine to carry… or just mine to witness?
Will my response bring clarity… or continue a pattern?
And sometimes the answer is clear:
Do not respond.
What Feels Different
At first, it felt uncomfortable.
There was a pull to explain.
To soften the silence.
To make sure everything stayed smooth.
But I’m learning:
Silence can be clarity.
What I’m Learning
Not responding is not rejection.
It is discernment.
It is choosing not to enter spaces
that pull me out of alignment.
It is trusting that:
what is meant to continue will continue
what fades without effort was not mine to sustain
A Quiet Prayer
Father,
Teach me when to speak… and when to remain still.
Give me the strength to pause
without guilt or fear.
Let my silence be rooted in wisdom,
not avoidance.
And let me trust that I don’t have to respond
to everything that reaches me.
Amen.
For You
If you feel the urge to respond immediately…
pause.
Take one breath.
And ask:
“What happens if I don’t?”
My Anchor
I respond from peace—or not at all.
With love,
