What Happens When Our Foundations Shake?

It wasn’t the ocean that shook us.
It wasn’t the wind.
It wasn’t the crashing waves against the shore.
It was a missing cell phone.
Within minutes, laughter became panic. Plans stopped. Emotions rose. Conversations changed. For a moment, it felt as though an entire world had come apart over something small.
Watching quietly, I realized something.
It usually isn’t the event that reveals our foundation.
It is the way our hearts respond when the unexpected arrives.
There were calm voices in the middle of the searching.
“Let’s breathe.”
“We’ll look together.”
“It’s only a phone.”
“We’ll find a solution.”
Sometimes, a peaceful presence becomes the strongest foundation in the room.
We are living in a season where it seems everything is shaking—families, institutions, finances, technology, and even the confidence people once placed in tomorrow.
But perhaps the shaking is revealing something deeper.
Not to condemn us.
To invite us.
Jesus spoke often about foundations because storms eventually come to every life.
Watching another person’s distress became a mirror. I asked myself:
What would shake me?
Where do I run first when life suddenly changes?
Do I immediately react, or do I remember who my Refuge is?
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way...”
Psalm 46:1–2
Eventually, someone remembered the “Find My Phone” feature connected to the watch.
A button was pressed.
The phone answered.
It wasn’t where anyone expected.
We turned around, drove thirty-five miles back, recovered it, and continued our camping trip.
The inconvenience was real.
The delay was real.
But so was the reminder.
When we pause, breathe, and work together, solutions often appear that panic could never see.
The news may continue to change.
Plans may unravel.
Foundations around us may seem uncertain.
But there is one foundation that has never shifted.
God’s love.
God’s presence.
God’s faithfulness.
Perhaps that is what every shaking is ultimately inviting us to remember.
Not that life will never surprise us.
But that our hearts can remain anchored, even when our plans are interrupted.
