I thought I had packed carefully.

Everything had been gathered with intention. Blankets. Sleeping bags. Toys. Bikes. The little things that make camping feel like home.

Then came another interruption.

I had brought the wrong tent.

It simply wouldn’t fit the campsite.

For a brief moment, I stood there looking at it, wondering what to do next. Someone kindly suggested we drive into town and buy another tent.

My first thought was, I’m not spending the money.

Instead of rushing into another purchase, we paused.

Then a friend smiled and said, “Come stay with us.”

She had a large seven-person tent and invited my grandson and me to share the space. We spread out our sleeping bags, made simple little pallets on the floor, and settled in for the night.

It wasn’t what I had planned.

It was better.

Because that evening, I was reminded that God’s provision doesn’t always arrive in the package we expected.

Sometimes it looks like someone’s generosity.

Sometimes it looks like enough.

Sometimes it looks like being willing to receive help.

I realized how quickly we can mistake inconvenience for disaster.

The wrong tent wasn’t a crisis.

It became an opportunity to experience community.

It became an opportunity to receive instead of striving.

It became a reminder that God often provides through the hands and hearts of other people.

That night, under a canopy of stars, listening to the sounds of the ocean in the distance, I experienced something I hadn’t realized I needed.

Holy rest.

Not because everything had gone according to plan.

But because everything I truly needed had already been provided.

Jesus once said,

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Holy rest is not the absence of interruptions.

It is the quiet confidence that God is already present within them.

Looking back, I realize the gift wasn’t the tent.

The gift wasn’t even the campsite.

The gift was discovering that when I released my plans into God’s hands, He quietly replaced my anxiety with peace.

Sometimes the greatest blessing isn’t getting everything exactly as we planned.

Sometimes it is discovering that God’s provision was waiting inside the interruption all along.

It wasn’t the ocean that shook us.

It wasn’t the wind.

It wasn’t the crashing waves against the shore.

It was a missing cell phone.

Within minutes, laughter became panic. Plans stopped. Emotions rose. Conversations changed. For a moment, it felt as though an entire world had come apart over something small.

Watching quietly, I realized something.

It usually isn’t the event that reveals our foundation.

It is the way our hearts respond when the unexpected arrives.

There were calm voices in the middle of the searching.

“Let’s breathe.”

“We’ll look together.”

“It’s only a phone.”

“We’ll find a solution.”

Sometimes, a peaceful presence becomes the strongest foundation in the room.

We are living in a season where it seems everything is shaking—families, institutions, finances, technology, and even the confidence people once placed in tomorrow.

But perhaps the shaking is revealing something deeper.

Not to condemn us.

To invite us.

Jesus spoke often about foundations because storms eventually come to every life.

Watching another person’s distress became a mirror. I asked myself:

• What would shake me?

• Where do I run first when life suddenly changes?

• Do I immediately react, or do I remember who my Refuge is?

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way...”

Psalm 46:1–2

Eventually, someone remembered the “Find My Phone” feature connected to the watch.

A button was pressed.

The phone answered.

It wasn’t where anyone expected.

We turned around, drove thirty-five miles back, recovered it, and continued our camping trip.

The inconvenience was real.

The delay was real.

But so was the reminder.

When we pause, breathe, and work together, solutions often appear that panic could never see.

The news may continue to change.

Plans may unravel.

Foundations around us may seem uncertain.

But there is one foundation that has never shifted.

God’s love.

God’s presence.

God’s faithfulness.

Perhaps that is what every shaking is ultimately inviting us to remember.

Not that life will never surprise us.

But that our hearts can remain anchored, even when our plans are interrupted.

A difficult truth:

The public also carries responsibility.

“Before I ask how my leaders are serving me, I must ask how I am showing up in service to my community.”

There is a difficult truth in every democracy:

A community does not only reflect the character of its leaders.

It also reflects the character of its citizens.

Before I repeat a rumor, I ask:

Have I sought the original source, or am I carrying a story that has been passed from one person to another?

Before I accuse, I ask:

Do I have facts, or do I have feelings that are asking for more information?

Before I assume someone’s intention, I ask:

Have I allowed them the dignity of explaining their perspective?

Before I demand transparency, I ask:

Am I willing to participate in the process of understanding?

Water is not just a bill that arrives in the mailbox.

Water is a shared lifeline.

It connects the employee who repairs a broken pipe at midnight, the office worker who answers a frustrated phone call, the board member who sits through long meetings, and the citizen who sacrifices to pay the monthly bill.

We may disagree on decisions.

We may question budgets.

We may challenge rates.

But we can still remember the humanity of the people on the other side of the counter.

Do I only walk through the door of the water department when I am angry?

Or do I also walk through the door to understand?

Do I know the names of the people who serve my community?

Have I ever said:

• “Thank you for repairing our water system.”

• “I know your work is not always easy.”

• “I appreciate your time explaining this to me.”

Have I sent a note of appreciation when someone has gone above and beyond?

Compassion does not mean silence.

Accountability does not mean hostility.

A healthy citizen can say:

“I appreciate your service, and I also have questions about how our shared resources are being managed.”

Both can be true.

Father God, search my own heart first.

Remove from me the desire to gossip, to assume, or to condemn without understanding.

Give me the courage to ask difficult questions with grace.

Bless those who serve our community with wisdom, humility, and integrity.

Help our leaders remember that they are stewards of what belongs to many.

Help us as citizens remember that we are not merely customers—we are neighbors sharing responsibility for the place we call home.

May truth be spoken with love, and may accountability be rooted in compassion.

Sometimes anger becomes accusation.
Sometimes rumors become facts before evidence is examined.

The healthy citizen asks:

• “Show me the records.”

• “Explain the process.”

• “Help me understand the budget.”

A democracy needs both watchdogs and wisdom.

I have possessions in my home that are fifty years old. Some may laugh and say, “Are you a pack rat?”

No.

I was raised with the understanding that when something has value, you care for it. You repair it. You preserve it. You do not waste what has been entrusted to your hands.

Perhaps that is why, when I sit in a public meeting and hear of an asset being sold, my heart naturally asks:

“Help me understand the stewardship behind the decision.”

Not because I know there is wrongdoing.

Not because I believe someone has bad intentions.

But because everything purchased by a community represents years of sacrifice from people who paid their bills, trusted their leaders, and believed those resources would be cared for.

A water tank is not merely plastic or fiberglass.

It represents ratepayer dollars, planning, labor, maintenance, and years of public trust.

A tank may be worth less today than the day it was purchased. It may cost money to remove, transport, and reinstall. A lower sale price may be completely reasonable.

And yet, a citizen may still ask:

• How was the value determined?

• What was the original investment?

• What costs are involved in moving it?

• Where will the money from the sale be placed?

• How will those funds continue to serve the community?

These are not questions of accusation.

They are questions of stewardship.

Father God,
Grant wisdom to those who lead and humility to those who question.

May leaders remember that what they manage has been entrusted to them by the hands of many.

May citizens seek truth without cruelty, accountability without accusation, and understanding before judgment.

Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts willing to work together for the good of all.

A government action can meet the letter of the law and still leave citizens with a feeling of concern.

Ethics often asks a higher question:

“Would this decision withstand the light of public understanding?”

Transparency is not only about proving innocence.

It is about allowing citizens to understand:

• Why decisions were made.

• How money was spent.

• Whether alternatives were considered.

• Whether relationships or interests were disclosed.

Transparency and disclosure are tools that help the public maintain confidence that decisions are fair and not driven by private benefit.

There are moments when a community gathers around a difficult issue and discovers that the issue itself is only part of the story.

A water bill arrives.

A rate increase is proposed.

A public hearing is scheduled.

Soon the conversation becomes about dollars and percentages.

Yet underneath the numbers are people.

The office employee answering the phone.

The retiree living on a fixed income.

The board members studying budgets late into the evening.

The seasonal homeowner.

The single parent.

The worker is trying to keep up with rising costs.

Everyone arrives carrying a different burden.

When fear enters a conversation, we sometimes forget that the person across from us is also carrying concerns we cannot see.

Accountability matters.

Transparency matters.

Questions matter.

Public participation matters.

These are healthy parts of our community.

But accountability does not require humiliation.

Disagreement does not require disrespect.

Calling someone names does not strengthen an argument.

Speaking firmly and respectfully does.

We can ask for records.

We can ask for explanations.

We can challenge decisions.

We can vote.

We can protest.

And we can still remember that the person sitting across the table is a human being deserving of respect.

Perhaps the question before us is not simply whether rates should rise or fall.

Perhaps the deeper question is:

Can we still remain neighbors while we work through difficult decisions together?

A healthy community does not require unanimous agreement.

It requires a shared commitment to truth, responsibility, and respect.

We all pay more today than we did yesterday.

Food costs more.

Fuel costs more.

Materials cost more.

Labor costs more.

The reality of rising costs touches every household and every organization.

That does not mean every increase is justified.

Nor does it mean every concern is unreasonable.

It means we are called to understand before we judge.

To listen before we assume.

To seek facts before we surrender to fear.

And to remember that peace is not the absence of disagreement.

Happy Birthday, America.

Two hundred and fifty years.

That number feels almost impossible to hold.

A nation is not only built from documents, borders, systems, or headlines. It is built quietly through people. Through kitchens and schools. Through tired parents and hopeful children. Through neighbors checking on one another. Through workers driving long roads home. Through grandparents praying softly at night for the safety of their families.

And maybe that is where I meet America most honestly now.

Not in noise.

But in the quiet.

This time of year has not always been easy for me. The sounds of fireworks and explosives have often stirred something tender inside me. Growing up around big cities, hearing the sharp crack of M80s and witnessing the fear, injuries, and chaos they sometimes caused, my nervous system learned to brace itself during celebrations that were meant to feel joyful.

Even now, my heart turns toward the animals trembling under beds, the birds startled from trees, the creatures who do not understand what is happening around them. I think of sensitive children. Veterans. The elderly. Those carrying invisible wounds inside their bodies and memories.

And yet…

I do not want fear to be the only story I carry about this season.

I want to remember another America too.

The America of summer evenings and front porches. The smell of food on the grill. Sparklers in little hands. Lawn chairs in small towns. The sound of laughter drifting across neighborhoods. Families gathered together under warm skies. The quiet goodness of ordinary people simply trying to love one another well.

Perhaps healing begins there.

Not in pretending everything is perfect.

But in choosing to create moments of safety within the world we are living in.

As within, so it becomes.

I have come to believe that what we cultivate quietly inside our homes matters deeply. The way we speak to one another. The peace we protect. The gentleness we offer to children, to animals, to ourselves. The moments we pause instead of react. The moments we choose compassion over noise.

Maybe devotion does not always arrive loudly.

Maybe sometimes devotion looks like lighting a candle instead of lighting fear.

Maybe it looks like comforting a frightened animal during fireworks.

Maybe it looks like sitting outside under the night sky and praying softly for humanity to remember its heart again.

I live my devotion quietly.

Within my home.

And I hope, little by little, it becomes something that helps heal others too—including myself.

So this July, I am holding a gentler prayer for America.

For safer celebrations.

For communities that remember care.

For children who feel secure.

For healing within our nervous systems.

For wisdom.

For kindness.

For humanity to rediscover that strength and tenderness can exist together.

When the Pattern Came Back

I thought I understood it.
I had written the words.
I had felt the release.
I had named the pattern.
There was a sense of peace in that.

And then Sunday came again.
Quiet. Familiar.
Carrying the same rhythm it always has.

The preparation.
The knowing.
The emotional undercurrent that doesn’t need words.
And just like before…
I felt it.

Monday morning came early.
And with it, that same weight tried to settle in.
Not loudly.
But enough to be recognized.
And I paused.
Because this is where the old version of me would have taken over.
She would have:
Carried it.
Absorbed it.
Moved forward as if it all belonged to her.
But this time…
I noticed something different.
The feeling was still there.
But I wasn’t lost inside of it.
I could see it.
I could name it.
I could feel it without becoming it.
And yes…
It still hurt.
That part hasn’t disappeared.
Because love doesn’t disappear.
Care doesn’t disappear.
Connection doesn’t disappear just because we become aware.
But something else didn’t disappear either.
Me.
I stayed with myself this time.
I didn’t rush to fix the feeling.
I didn’t rush to carry everything that came with it.
I didn’t assume that just because I felt it…
it was mine to hold.
I let the wave move.
Without attaching myself to it.
And in that space…
there was something new.
Not complete peace.
Not total resolution.
But steadiness.
A quiet knowing that said:
“You are not where you used to be.”
That matters.
Even if the pattern hasn’t fully left.
Even if the feeling still visits.
Even if the rhythm still shows up at the same time, in the same way.
Because I am not showing up the same.
And maybe that’s what healing really is.
Not the absence of the pattern…
But the presence of awareness within it.
The pattern came back.
But I didn’t abandon myself when it did.
And that changes everything.
I am learning that I can:
Feel deeply…
Without carrying everything.
Love fully…
Without losing myself.
Stand steady…
Even when the same winds blow through again.
This is where I am now.
Not finished.
Not untouched.
But aware.
And for the first time…
That feels like enough.

There was a moment recently…

Thoughts move quickly.

Not every thought deserves my agreement.

Scripture reminds us to take every thought captive.
And I’m beginning to understand what that means.
It’s not control.
It’s awareness.
It’s choosing:
What stays.
What goes.
What belongs.
And in that space…
there is peace.
